Blackwood is a medium size tree native to south eastern Australia and Tasmania. It grows in rainforests to a height of approximately 35 meters.
The heartwood varies from a lustrous golden brown to reddish dark brown with curly to interlocked grain.
Blackwood is known for its unique and striking fiddle back, figured and quilted which occurs only in select trees, giving the wood a quilting effect reminiscent of gathered silk.
It is a close relative of the Hawaiian Koa wood, which is famous for use in musical instruments. Fiddleback, figured and quilted Blackwood is highly sought after by woodworkers and luthiers for musical instruments.
